DNS Setup
Before your Stella Source powered storefront can go live, your DNS needs to be configured correctly. This article explains what DNS is, who typically handles it, and what to expect during the setup process.

DNS Setup will point your online store to your domain via a subdomain.

A subdomain is a prefix added to a domain name (e.g., prefix.yourcompany.com) to create a distinct, separate section of a website under the main domain. Subdomains are used to organize content, such as separating a store (shop.yourcompany.com) or support (support.yourcompany.com) from the main website (yourcompany.com), functioning as independent sites while sharing the primary domain's reputation.

Your storefront will be a subdomain on your domain, such as shop.yourcompany.com or buy.yourcompany.com.

What is DNS?

DNS (Domain Name System) is essentially the internet's address book. It connects your website's domain name (like yourcompany.com) to the servers that actually host your content. Without the correct DNS settings in place, your storefront won't be accessible to your customers.

Who Sets Up the DNS?

You are responsible for initiating the DNS setup; but that doesn't necessarily mean you do it yourself. This is typically handled by:

  • Your website hosting company if a third-party company manages your website
  • Your internal IT person or team if DNS is managed in-house

If you're unsure who manages your DNS, a good starting point is asking whoever manages your company's website.

How the Setup Works

Step 1: Receive Your DNS Records from Stella Source

Once your account is ready, we will send you the specific DNS records needed to configure your domain. You'll receive two records that need to be added to your DNS settings.

Step 2: Provide the Records to Your DNS Manager

Forward the records Stella Source sends you to your hosting company or IT person and ask them to add these entries to your DNS settings.

Step 3: Go Live

Once the DNS records have been added, let your Stella Source Support Representative know and we'll take care of the rest, turning on your storefront for your customers to start shopping.
